The Day PC Gaming Died*: 3D Realms Closes Down
Whelp, so this means Duke Nukem Forever really will never come out—shock and awe. Biting irony aside, it truly is a sad day not only for all now-former 3D Realms employees, but old-timey PC gamers weaned on old Apogee shareware titles (Crystal Caves and Commander Keen — never forget). Shacknews reports that the house of all things Duke Nukem (and Apogee, I guess) is shutting down operations due to lack of funding (aka The Great Depression Vol. 2). I suppose this marks a fitting end to Duke Nukem: old Duke was great, but as time passed, and games got raunchier and edgier, the series just got stale and obsolete. Being the butt of all vaporware jokes didn’t help Duke’s stock that much either.
More as this story develops.
Update: Deep Silver and Apogee just sent out this statement:
Deep Silver and Apogee Software are not affected by the situation at 3D Realms. Development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned.
