More Real Talk From The Guv’ment: MMOs are for Losers (Not Really)

Local gaming blog Hackenslash just picked up a story from AKYBAYAN Rep. Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel’s speech during the UP Cebu Campus’ commencement exercises. The solon quipped, and I quote, “DOTA, or any role-playing game for that matter, may be fun, but it won’t be able to teach you the skills you need for your first job, or for higher education.” She’s right, you know.

Far too many times have I seen people engrossed in loot/collectathon MMO games lose their jobs, flunk out of school, and pretty much ruin their lives. Most of these self-branded “gaming addicts” never really progress into much more productive roles in the industry, such as development or perhaps even “journalism.” I suppose the real message here is to “play responsibly,” for lack of a more clever phrase.

“You may protest and extol the virtues of being Mogul the Axe for five hours, but unless you are in the brink of developing gaming software and needs the game to test your theories, then play DOTA or any RPG in moderation,” added Rep. Hontiveros-Baraquel.

The entire tirade would have been cool and everything, but she did have to end with this totally off-base allegory rationalizing Google’s search algorythms as the key to life, universe, and everything: “[...] what’s true with Google is somehow true with life. There are certain keywords that we must learn to live by. The more we hone our keywords, the better the search result is.” Whatever you say, random public official!

    DOTA is not an RPG.

    But yeah I agree with her on most points.

  • cheena says:

    What’s with the Google allegory? For something she ‘endorses’, she’s not too adept at using it, huh.

    Totally missing the point for the most part. She can just say ‘play in moderation’, and she’s done.

    I don’t think she was missing the point as much as the entire speech sounded contrived in general. Great points, subpar delivery.

  • Asker25 says:

    I think DOTA is an RPG…

    RPG = Role Playing Game..

    i think using the heroes in DOTA is already a role to be played in a game?

  • Orriolle G says:

    Well… Who is he to say that. Although he is right on some points. I think we should be more responsible in playing our games. I think we should have a campaign for responsible gaming. What do you think? Not just in ads or the internet but also the TV as well. Or much better a gathering. I hope I didn’t overdo my suggestion or I’m already off topic.
