EGM Founder to Resume Magazine & Online Publication

EGM Founder to Resume Magazine & Online Publication

Fun fact: did you guys know that GAME! was supposed to be EGM Philippines? For reals. Either way, we’re elated to know that Steve Harris, founder of Electronic Gaming Monthly (circa 1989), has snapped up the beleaguered magazine’s assets from Ziff-Davis Media and will resume publishing the magazine in the second half of 2009. Harris promised to reveal more details at E3, but I personally am already digging the return of the old-school EGM logo — wasn’t really a fan of the faux pixel-art look they had going on for a while.

EGM, as many of you may recall, was shuttered last January when Ziff-Davis ceased the magazine’s circulation. Concurrently, UGO purchased the 1up brand, which is still alive and kicking, albeit with a much-reduced number of staff.

“The re-launch of Electronic Gaming Monthly represents a welcome opportunity to continue delivering quality content to gaming enthusiasts,” said Harris. “I feel honored to once again be associated with this respected magazine. The talented writers and designers who built upon EGM’s original vision have left behind a publication that is uniquely positioned to be successful.” “We have exciting plans for the evolution of what will once again be a leading independent voice for the gaming community,” Harris continued. “The twenty year success of the EGM brand has always been built upon a commitment to its readers who I believe will enthusiastically embrace the changes we are planning to introduce.”

Sounds good, but most of EGM’s original crew are either stuck at the UGO-owned 1up.com, already have cushy PR/QA jobs in the industry, or have their own splintered sites already up and running. It’ll be interesting if this Neo-EGM, as it was, will contain many of the same personalities that shaped the magazine over the years; or if the publication will ironically be “EGM in name only.”
