Late Wrestling Great Mitsuharu Misawa’s Love for Video Games
For those who haven’t heard, one of the most important and greatest wrestling figures of all time, Mitsuharu Misawa, passed away last June 13 following spinal-related concerns after a routine yet accidental back drop (Japan loves those dangerous maneuvers).
Those who are viewers of his work should know that this is a significant loss in many respects. After all, he’s the man that has garnered more five-star matches than any other wrestler in the world, and created his own wrestling company in Japan, Pro Wrestling NOAH (thus giving other people opportunities). If anything, he’s the antithesis of Hulk Hogan (considering how Hogan is a mess these days, right, Linda?) though their popularity (along with some guy named The Rock) is rivaled, and there’s the part where Misawa is actually a great wrestler to begin with. Besides being the 2nd Tiger Mask, he didn’t even need any gimmick past that. And as if that isn’t awesome enough, he also loved video games.
In an interview with Famitsu some time before (as Kotaku revealed recently), he is actually a fan of video games, and his library of faves include the following:
- Super Mario Bros., Momotaro Dentetsu, Ganbare Goemon! Karakuri Dochu (Goemon = Awesome), Dragon Quest (surprise surprise!), Final Fantasy (another Squeenix title), Fire Emblem (kudos!), R-TYPE (you win, sir!), Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (respect X10), Super Robot Taisen (fanboys will surely like to hear this one)
Giving credit where credit is due, he does have taste in games for sure and is definitely a fan of multiple genres to boot. He will forever be missed.
For those who are not familiar with his work, here’s a little sampler for you to check out. It is highly recommended that you guys check out his matches over at YouTube (especially with matches including Kenta Kobashi and Samoa Joe) to give you an idea on what he’s all about.
Here’s an extra bonus to show how much of a personality he is in his native homeland of Japan. Who’s John Cena again?
