Interesting to note that the Atlus-developed Shin Megami Tensei Online did not make it as their maiden launch as an online games publisher.  Hmmmmm.  Anyway…

What is Neo Steam?

Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent is a steampunk MMORPG set in the divided fantasy world of  Chrysalis where three recovering continents battle each other for the Neo Steam — a scarce resource that provides energy for a recently unearthed, ancient (but powerful) technology.

Hold up though, steampunk?

Steampunk

Steampunk is a theme set  in an alternate world wherein useful inventions of today are recreated in a way that old parts are incorporated and are  steam-powered (thus the name).  These appear to be last-minute improvisations which explains why the gadgets usually have exposed parts, such as gears moving, bolts, etc.  The world in steampunk is dirty and grimy because of the general population’s use of steam. Think of movies such as Wild, Wild West and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (LXG) and you’ll get it :)

There are two main factions in the game which a player can choose to join at the start of the  game. The Republic of Rogwell is the realm of science wherein inventions and experiments flourish, while the Republic of Elerd is composed of the magic and artifacts users.  Players can also choose which race to play — from humans, half-humans, beasts down to the cute Poms (small, furry creatures).

Aside from the unique setting and graphical styling (steampunk meets anime), another interesting concept in Neo Steam is the traveling via the use of steam-based machines and vehicles.  Some include steam balloons, zeppelins, cannons (!) and of course, trains.  Eventually, players will be able to acquire their own steam machines and use it for combat, even in player vs. player.  However, the type of machines will depend on the player’s chosen nationality — either a full-blown machine for Rogwell or a golem-type organic machine for Elerd. There is also a realm vs. realm mode in the game, so hardcore MMORPG players, take  note!

Pets are also incorporated in the game and are pretty useful, as they aid players in their adventures.  Pets evolve after time and can specialize in either combat, healing or even stealing.

All in all, Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent is a worth a try.  The game breaks free from the usual humdrum fantasy world and introduces its players to a whole new type of environment.  It doesn’t hurt that Atlus is behind it, right? :)

Also, what game allows you to use animated toilet gear as a weapon and armor (and still look absurdly cute?)
