SM Megamall’s Megtrade Hall 2 was loaded with gamers and animé enthusiasts as Otaku Expo kicked off last January 23-24, 2010.

As expected, the place was filled with cosplayers of different animé and gaming characters.

Aside from the cosplay competition, gaming tournaments were also held. Run Up Philippines held tournament for their game Luna Online. Crafting challenge, guild relay, and newbie package redemption were some of the activities they prepared. And who could miss the gorgeous Luna Girls?

And of course, the event will not be complete without the Otaku Maid Café, where food like sushi, crepees, parfaits, and croquettes were served. The Café also served a special Luna Online-inspired dessert buffet.

A couple of things struck me as odd however: Monster Hunter Portable 2G hasn’t been released in North America yet, and yes, I’m aware that unauthorized translation patches are available for the Japanese game, which means that participants are either going to have to dump their own game into an ISO to play the game in English, or more likely, will be playing with pirated copies of the game; a truly telling and sad sign if that’s the case. I’m also wondering how the event organizers are going to handle cheating, something that is very possible on-the-fly with custom firmware on the PSP. And they are now recruiting gaming warriors to join the THUMB WARS, a hack, slash, hunt, maim, destroy the enemy and declarted the ultimate fighting maching in Cyberzone’s ULTIMATE MONSTER HUNTER (Portable 2G) PSP Tournament

the big Thumb Wars tournament will be on May 23-24, 2009 at the Cyberzone One E-Com center, SM Mall of Asia Complex.

On-site registration is required at 11am on May 23, 2009. Come early!
Only 15 groups of four (4) will be admitted. All players must bring their own
PSP Lite (PSP2000) for the competition.

Each PSP Unit will be subject to the review of the game masters.

Step your game up!. Cash Prizes await only the best fighters.

Atari’s PR only stated that:

“Atari has made the proactive decision to attend but not exhibit at this year’s E3 event. Although we feel E3 benefits the entire games business, we are very focused around other selling and marketing initiatives for our upcoming Ghostbusters, Champions Online and other to be announced titles.”
